ChatGPT is sending visitors to Kenyan websites.
Some of those visitors are looking for a business to hire, a product to buy or a service to compare. They ask ChatGPT a question, receive an answer containing links, and click through to one of the websites mentioned.
The traffic is no longer theoretical. It is already showing up in website analytics.
Google Analytics now groups recognised visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and similar platforms under an AI Assistants channel.
Bing Webmaster Tools has introduced reports showing when websites are cited in Microsoft’s AI-generated answers. Google Search Console now provides dedicated reporting for visibility in AI Overviews, AI Mode and other generative AI features.
The tracking tools have changed because the way people find websites has changed.
Yet many Kenyan website owners still measure online visibility through Google rankings, organic search traffic and social media referrals alone. They rarely check which AI platforms are sending visitors, which pages are being cited or what those visitors do after arriving.
That leaves a growing source of discovery hidden in plain sight.
The question is no longer whether ChatGPT can send traffic to your website. It is how much traffic it is already sending, which pages are earning it and whether those visits are producing enquiries or sales.
AI traffic has reached Kenyan websites
The clearest evidence is already available in traffic-estimation tools.
Similarweb estimated that Jumia.co.ke received about 27,200 visits from AI platforms in June 2026. ChatGPT accounted for an estimated 76.71% of those visits.
Jumia is one of Kenya’s largest ecommerce websites, so a small business should not expect similar numbers. The importance of the example is not the size of the traffic.
It proves that people are moving from AI-generated answers to websites serving the Kenyan market.
The same journey can happen for a law firm, web hosting company, furniture shop, school, clinic, hotel or real estate agency.
A user might ask:
Which company offers reliable web hosting in Kenya?
Where can I buy affordable office furniture in Nairobi?
What is the best business email provider for a Kenyan company?
Which estates are suitable for families in Nairobi?
Where can I register a .co.ke domain?
Which schools in Kiambu follow the British curriculum?
What should I check before buying land in Kenya?
ChatGPT can answer using information gathered from business websites, articles, product pages and third-party sources. When links appear in the answer, users can click through to learn more, confirm a claim, compare prices or contact the company.
OpenAI now automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links from ChatGPT search results. This gives publishers and website owners a clearer way to identify incoming ChatGPT traffic in tools such as Google Analytics.
That is direct, measurable traffic.
It is not a prediction about what AI search might do in three years. It is traffic that can already appear in a Kenyan website’s acquisition reports today.
Kenya is well placed for AI-led discovery
Kenyan businesses should pay attention because ChatGPT use in the country is unusually high.
DataReportal reported in July 2025 that more than four in ten connected adults in Kenya had used ChatGPT within the previous month. Kenya was among the countries with the highest reported adoption in the survey.
This matters because AI traffic begins with user behaviour.
People do not need to understand terms such as generative engine optimisation or answer engine optimisation. They only need to discover that asking ChatGPT is a convenient way to research a purchase or solve a problem.
The shift can start with ordinary questions:
What laptop is suitable for a university student in Kenya?
How much does it cost to build a website in Nairobi?
Which insurance covers small businesses?
What is the cheapest way to host a WordPress website?
Which internet provider is reliable in my area?
These are not necessarily replacements for Google searches. A person may use ChatGPT to understand the options, Google to confirm a brand, then WhatsApp to contact the business.
The customer journey becomes more complicated, but the commercial intent remains.
For Kenyan businesses, the opportunity is not limited to ranking for broad keywords. A website can also become a source that AI systems use when answering specific questions about local prices, products, places and services.
The analytics platforms have acknowledged the change
A major traffic source becomes difficult to dismiss once analytics and webmaster platforms build dedicated reports for it.
That is now happening.
Google Analytics can separate AI referrals
Google Analytics defines AI Assistants as the channel through which users arrive from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok.
Google’s definition excludes its own AI Overviews and AI Mode because those experiences sit within Google Search rather than an external AI referral channel.
The distinction is useful:
A click from ChatGPT can appear under AI Assistants.
A click from Google AI Mode remains part of Google Search traffic.
A citation in an AI answer may produce visibility without producing a click.
A user influenced by an AI answer may later arrive through direct or branded search.
Before the AI Assistants channel was introduced, these visits could be scattered across referral, unassigned or other reporting categories. Many website owners would only find them by checking the full source and medium report.
Even now, the channel name alone does not tell the full story. Website owners should open the Traffic acquisition report and inspect Session source / medium, which shows the source that initiated each session.
That is where specific sources such as chatgpt.com become easier to identify.
Bing Webmaster Tools reports AI citations
Bing Webmaster Tools goes beyond referral traffic.
Its AI Performance report shows when pages from a website are cited in AI-generated answers across Microsoft experiences, including Copilot. The report includes citation totals and information about which pages are being referenced.
Microsoft later expanded the reporting with information about user intents, topics, citation share and comparisons over time.
This introduces an important measurement difference.
A citation is not the same as a visit.
Your page may help support an AI answer even when the user does not click. That exposure can still introduce your brand, shape the user’s decision or encourage a later search.
Traditional analytics only begins when someone reaches the website. Citation reporting gives website owners a view of what happened before the click.
Google Search Console now exposes AI visibility
Google previously included activity from AI search features within its normal web performance reports.
In June 2026, Google announced separate Search Console views for visibility in generative AI features, including AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI experiences in Discover. The data remains included in the overall performance report, but the dedicated view makes it easier to inspect AI-related impressions.
This means the three major measurement surfaces now cover different parts of AI discovery:
Tool | What it helps you see |
|---|---|
Google Analytics | Visits arriving from ChatGPT and other external AI assistants |
Bing Webmaster Tools | Pages cited across Microsoft’s AI experiences |
Google Search Console | Visibility and search activity connected to Google’s generative AI features |
Website owners who only check total organic sessions are missing much of this picture.
Why most website owners have not noticed
AI traffic is easy to overlook because it usually begins as a small number.
A business might receive five ChatGPT visits this month, 14 the next month and 30 after that. Against thousands of visits from Google, Facebook or direct traffic, the numbers can look unimportant.
They may also be spread across several sources:
chatgpt.comchat.openai.comgemini.google.comcopilot.microsoft.comperplexity.aiReferral
AI Assistants
Unassigned
Direct
A website owner looking only at the default summary cards may never see them.
Many businesses also depend on simplified reports created years ago. Their dashboards show organic traffic, paid traffic, social traffic and direct traffic, but have no separate section for AI assistants.
The traffic then exists without becoming part of the monthly conversation.
There is another measurement problem: not every AI-influenced visit arrives directly from an AI platform.
A potential customer can discover Amplify SEO in ChatGPT, close the conversation, search for the company on Google and visit through a branded result.
Google Analytics records the final session as organic search. ChatGPT’s role in introducing the business disappears.
The same person might instead:
Type the domain directly.
Open the company’s Google Business Profile.
Send a WhatsApp message.
Call the phone number.
Ask a colleague about the brand.
Return several days later through a bookmark.
Visible ChatGPT referrals are therefore the easiest part to measure, not the complete value of AI discovery.
A citation, a click and a customer are different events
Businesses need to separate three stages when measuring AI visibility.
The website is mentioned or cited
An AI platform uses the website as a source or names the business in an answer.
This creates visibility, but the user may not click.
Bing Webmaster Tools and Google Search Console can help reveal parts of this activity within their own search and AI products.
The user visits the website
The user clicks a link and starts a session.
Google Analytics can record this visit and identify the source when the referral information is preserved.
This is the traffic most website owners think about first.
The visitor takes a valuable action
The person sends an enquiry, starts a WhatsApp conversation, calls the business, requests a quote, creates an account or completes a purchase.
This is where traffic becomes commercially useful.
A website can receive many AI mentions and few clicks. It can also receive only a small number of AI visits but convert them at a high rate.
That is why traffic volume should not be the only measure.
Small traffic can still carry strong intent
A user scrolling through Facebook may have no immediate interest in buying from you.
A user asking ChatGPT to compare web hosting companies in Kenya is different. The question itself shows that the person is researching a decision.
By the time that user clicks a cited website, they may already understand the problem and have narrowed the available options.
This does not mean every ChatGPT visitor is ready to buy. It means AI referrals should be evaluated by what the visitors do, not dismissed because the total is small.
For each source, compare:
Engaged sessions
Enquiry submissions
WhatsApp clicks
Calls
Account registrations
Purchases
Revenue
Landing pages
Return visits
Ten visits that produce two qualified enquiries may be more valuable than 500 low-intent visits that produce nothing.
At the same time, businesses should avoid exaggerating the channel.
Research published in July 2026 using US desktop clickstream data estimated that ChatGPT generated outbound website clicks in only 5.2% of conversation sessions. In most sessions, the user received an answer without leaving ChatGPT.
ChatGPT sends traffic, but it also answers many questions without sending a visit.
Both realities matter.
The pages earning AI traffic are not always the homepage
Businesses often think visibility begins and ends with the homepage.
AI assistants may instead discover and cite a page buried several folders inside the website because that page contains the clearest answer to a specific question.
A pricing page may be useful when someone asks how much a service costs. A comparison article may support a question about which product is better. A local guide may help answer a question about operating in Kenya.
Pages likely to attract AI citations and referrals include:
Detailed service pages
Pricing pages
Product specifications
Comparison articles
Original research
Local market reports
How-to articles
Frequently asked questions
Reviews and alternatives
Pages answering narrow customer questions
Similarweb has reported a difference between the pages that ChatGPT cites and the pages receiving referral traffic. Its 2026 generative AI report found that many cited URLs were deeper within websites, while a large share of AI referral traffic landed on homepages.
That suggests two connected behaviours.
ChatGPT may use a detailed article to form or support an answer. The user may then click the company name or homepage to investigate the business.
A useful article can therefore introduce the brand even when it is not the final landing page.
How to check whether ChatGPT is sending you traffic
Start in Google Analytics.
Open:
Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition
Set the main dimension to Session default channel group and look for AI Assistants.
Then change or add the dimension Session source / medium.
Search for source names containing:
chatgpt
openai
gemini
copilot
perplexity
claude
deepseek
grok
For ChatGPT, pay particular attention to:
chatgpt.com
chat.openai.com
OpenAI’s referral links can also include:
utm_source=chatgpt.com
Do not stop at the number of sessions.
Add landing-page information and compare the visitors against the actions that matter to the business. A service business may care about form submissions and phone calls. An ecommerce website may care about add-to-cart activity, transactions and revenue.
Next, open Bing Webmaster Tools and check the AI Performance section.
Look for:
Total citations
Pages being cited
Topics connected to those citations
User intents
Changes over time
Finally, inspect the generative AI reports in Google Search Console. Check which pages receive visibility in AI Overviews, AI Mode and other supported Google experiences.
The three tools will not report identical numbers because they measure different platforms and stages of discovery.
That is expected.
Before chasing AI visibility, establish a baseline
AI search has already produced a rush of new terminology, audits and optimisation services.
Businesses are being told to invest in AEO, GEO, LLM optimisation and AI search visibility before they have checked whether any of their existing pages are already performing.
Measurement should come first.
Record:
Current AI referral sessions
Current AI citations
Landing pages receiving AI visitors
Pages appearing in generative search reports
Leads and sales associated with those sessions
Branded search growth
Customer-reported discovery sources
Then review the numbers monthly.
Without a baseline, any future increase can be presented as a success even when the wider platform is growing at the same rate.
A 2026 field study of ChatGPT referral traffic found that raw traffic growth could substantially overstate the effect of optimisation. In the study, ChatGPT referrals rose across both pages that had received specific optimisation work and untreated pages on the same website. The researchers concluded that platform growth itself explained a large part of the increase.
This is a useful warning for Kenyan businesses.
Do not assume that every increase proves an optimisation tactic worked. Compare the performance of updated pages against the rest of the website, and connect the change to leads or revenue.
What makes a Kenyan website useful to AI search?
There is no special paragraph length or secret schema markup that guarantees a ChatGPT citation.
The basic requirement is more demanding: publish information that deserves to be used.
For a Kenyan website, that often means replacing vague global advice with clear local detail.
A page about business registration should explain the Kenyan process. A hosting comparison should include current prices, renewal terms and server locations. A real estate article should name the relevant neighbourhoods and explain the differences between them.
Useful content includes:
Accurate Kenyan prices
Clear product and service details
Named locations
Original data
First-hand experience
Current dates
Limitations and conditions
Supporting sources
Clear ownership and authorship
Easy ways to contact or buy
The page should answer the question directly, but it should also offer something worth clicking for.
That might be a calculator, complete price table, downloadable document, product comparison, booking tool, original dataset or quotation form.
When the entire value of a page can be summarised in two sentences, the AI answer may remove the need to visit.
When the page contains useful depth or enables the next action, the click has a stronger reason to happen.
ChatGPT is not replacing Google, but discovery is becoming wider
Google remains the largest source of search traffic for most Kenyan websites.
ChatGPT referrals are still small by comparison. Even after strong recent growth, worldwide referral traffic from ChatGPT represents a small share of total website traffic. SE Ranking estimated that its global referral share rose from 0.23% in April 2026 to 0.32% in May.
Small does not mean irrelevant.
Search, social media, maps, marketplaces, video platforms and AI assistants can all contribute to one customer journey.
A person may:
Ask ChatGPT which companies to consider.
Search the recommended names on Google.
Read reviews.
visit two websites.
Contact one business on WhatsApp.
Buy several days later.
The business that looks only at the final click sees an organic or direct conversion. The business that understands the full journey sees ChatGPT as one of the discovery points.
That is the real shift.
AI assistants are becoming another layer between the customer’s question and the websites that can solve it.
Check the traffic before your competitors do
ChatGPT is already sending users to Kenyan websites.
Google Analytics can identify visits from AI assistants. Bing Webmaster Tools can show citations inside Microsoft’s AI answers. Google Search Console can report visibility across Google’s generative search experiences.
The tools are available.
What is missing in many businesses is the habit of checking them.
Open your acquisition reports. Search for ChatGPT and other AI sources. Identify the pages receiving visits. Compare those visitors against enquiries, calls, sales and revenue.
You may find only a few sessions.
That is still a baseline.
The businesses that begin measuring now will understand how the channel develops, which content earns visibility and when the traffic becomes commercially important.
The businesses that wait will eventually see AI traffic in a report and assume it appeared overnight.
It did not.
They simply had not been looking.
