How to Build an Internal Linking Strategy for a Kenyan Business

An internal link should help someone continue a task. It may move a reader from a general explanation to a detailed method, from a guide to the relevant service, or from a product category to the item that fits their need.

That same route helps search engines discover pages and understand how your content relates. But the strategy starts with the reader—not with inserting the same keyword-rich anchor into every article.

A useful internal linking system answers four questions:

  1. Which canonical page owns each task?

  2. Which other pages give a reader a genuine reason to visit it?

  3. What link text sets the right expectation?

  4. Does the destination work and continue the journey?

This guide shows how to build that system for a Kenyan business website, from page inventory and topic clusters to implementation, maintenance and measurement.

Internal links are routes between page decisions

Google uses links to find pages and as a signal when assessing relevance. Its current link guidance also emphasises the reader: internal links and their anchor text help people and Google understand pages and find related resources.

Treat every link as a small promise:

If you follow this route, the destination will help with the next part of your task.

That promise fails when “learn more” opens an unrelated sales page, a link points through an obsolete redirect, or a keyword-stuffed anchor exaggerates what the destination covers.

An internal linking strategy therefore needs three layers:

Decide which sources and destinations form a useful sequence

Make the route crawlable, descriptive, direct and maintainable

Links cannot repair confused page ownership. If two articles claim the same task, decide whether to differentiate or consolidate them before building more routes into both.

1) Inventory canonical pages and their jobs

Start with the pages that should exist, not every URL a crawler can produce.

Combine your sitemap, CMS export, navigation, Search Console pages and crawl data. For each useful canonical page, record:

  • URL;

  • HTTP status;

  • indexability;

  • declared canonical;

  • page type;

  • primary reader task;

  • topic cluster;

  • business role;

  • useful next step;

  • current inbound internal-link sources; and

  • current outbound destinations.

Keep duplicate parameters, print versions, staging URLs and redirected paths out of the preferred target list. Google recommends linking consistently to canonical URLs rather than alternate versions.

Do not treat a URL as important simply because it receives many template links. First define why a reader needs it.

If you have not assigned page owners, complete keyword research and mapping before the link audit.

2) Give each page a cluster role

A topic cluster should model related customer tasks, not a pile of pages containing the same phrase. The SEO content plan should establish those tasks and page owners before production begins.

Assign roles such as:

  • Pillar or overview: Orients the reader and routes them to specialised tasks.

  • Supporting guide: Answers one focused question completely.

  • Commercial owner: Explains a service, product or category and supports action.

  • Comparison or decision page: Helps a reader evaluate options or criteria.

  • Proof page: Supplies a documented example, process or approved evidence.

  • Support page: Helps an existing customer complete or troubleshoot a task.

The label “pillar” does not automatically make a page more important. Its function does. A focused service page may carry more business importance than a broad guide. Use entity salience to improve the relationships explained inside a page; use internal links to connect that page to other canonical resources.

For every page, write:

  • pages that should link into it;

  • pages it should link out to;

  • the reason for each route; and

  • where the reader stands before and after following it.

This method prevents a common mistake: every supporting article links up to the pillar, but the pillar never routes readers back to the detailed answers.

3) Separate structural links from contextual links

Different link placements do different jobs.

Primary navigation

Navigation exposes stable, high-level destinations such as services, products, resources and contact paths. Keep it focused on frequent user needs. Do not put every article into the main menu.

Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs show where a page sits within a hierarchy and give readers a route back to broader levels. They should match the actual information architecture rather than display an invented keyword trail.

Contextual links

These links sit inside the main content where the source creates a genuine reason to visit another page. They usually carry the strongest editorial explanation because the surrounding sentence establishes the relationship.

Related-resource modules

A selected related-content block can help readers continue after finishing a page. Choose destinations by the next task, not category alone. A generic “latest posts” widget may show recency without relevance.

Action links

Buttons and calls to action move readers into a service, quote, checkout or contact route. They remain internal links, but their commercial purpose should stay clear. A helpful contextual link should not disguise a sales destination.

Use structural links for stable wayfinding and contextual links for specific editorial relationships. Do not expect a footer containing every URL to replace thoughtful paths.

4) Design reader paths before placing anchors

Sketch the decisions inside one cluster.

A practical path may look like this:

  1. An overview introduces the problem.

  2. A focused guide answers one difficult question.

  3. A comparison or process page helps the reader evaluate an approach.

  4. A commercial page explains the applicable service or product.

  5. A quote, booking or purchase route completes the action.

Not every reader should start at step one or reach step five. Each page must stand on its own and offer the next route only when it helps.

Link in more than one direction:

  • overview to supporting detail;

  • supporting detail back to useful context;

  • adjacent guide to adjacent guide when the tasks genuinely connect;

  • informational content to a relevant commercial owner;

  • commercial pages to evidence, process or support resources; and

  • updated pages to the current canonical replacement.

Do not build circular paths with no conclusion. A reader should not bounce among three articles that repeat the same introduction.

5) Find source-to-target opportunities systematically

Begin with priority target pages rather than editing articles at random.

For each target, search the site for:

  • its primary subject;

  • close language readers use for the same destination;

  • problems the target solves;

  • prerequisite concepts;

  • next-step phrases; and

  • old URLs or former names.

Then review the source paragraph. A matching phrase does not automatically justify a link. Ask:

  • Would the target answer a question created here?

  • Would the source reader reasonably expect that destination?

  • Does another page own this next step better?

  • Does the target remain accurate and live?

  • Would the link interrupt a task that the current page should complete itself?

Use your crawl export, CMS search or site search to find candidates. Search Console's Links report can show top internally linked pages and sources linking to a target, but Google describes it as a sample rather than a comprehensive inventory.

Glarify describes sitemap management and keyword-cannibalisation detection among its features. Those signals can help confirm canonical owners and overlap before you point more links at a page. Inspect the live source and destination yourself; a tool cannot judge whether the route helps the reader.

6) Write anchor text that sets an accurate expectation

Good anchor text tells a reader enough about the destination to decide whether to follow it.

Google recommends anchor text that is descriptive, reasonably concise and relevant to both pages. The surrounding sentence matters too.

The last weak example may contain more keywords, but it sounds forced and may promise a ranking or price position the destination cannot prove.

Use natural variation when different sentences create different expectations. A service page may receive anchors such as “office cleaning services,” “request a commercial cleaning assessment” and “the Nairobi cleaning service,” provided each phrase accurately describes the target.

Avoid:

  • empty linked icons without an accessible name;

  • entire paragraphs as anchors;

  • several links chained together without context;

  • repeated exact-match anchors inserted mechanically;

  • link text that claims “cheapest,” “best” or “guaranteed” without evidence; and

  • an anchor describing one page while opening another.

Read only the anchor text. If you cannot predict the destination, improve it. Then read the full sentence and check whether the route feels earned.

7) Place contextual links where the need appears

Put a link close to the statement or decision it supports.

If a pricing guide mentions that service scope affects a quotation, link from that explanation to the service-scope page. Do not wait until a generic list of ten links at the end.

A strong contextual sentence contains:

  1. the idea the reader is considering;

  2. why another resource helps; and

  3. an anchor that identifies the destination.

For example:

Before comparing quotations, define the recurring tasks using an office cleaning scope checklist.

The sentence explains both timing and value.

Do not link the first occurrence of every keyword by rule. Sometimes a later paragraph creates the clearer need. Do not repeat the same target every few paragraphs unless each placement serves a distinct action.

Google publishes no magical ideal number of links for a page. Use the number required to support navigation, evidence and next steps without turning the article into a directory.

8) Make every important link technically crawlable

A visually clickable element does not always create a reliable crawlable link.

Google says it can generally crawl links written as HTML anchor elements with href values that resolve to real web addresses:

Avoid relying only on script actions or non-anchor elements:

<span onclick="openPayroll()">Payroll services</span>

For client-rendered applications, inspect the rendered HTML and use URL Inspection to confirm that Google can see the anchor and destination.

Technical QA should also confirm:

  • the destination returns the intended status;

  • the link points directly to the canonical URL;

  • no avoidable redirect hop sits between source and target;

  • fragments identify real sections when used;

  • the link works with keyboard navigation;

  • visible focus and contrast support accessibility;

  • linked images have descriptive alt text; and

  • mobile layouts do not hide essential routes.

Google uses a linked image's alt text as anchor text. Describe the destination or action rather than stuffing keywords into the image alt.

9) Build links into the publishing workflow

Do not publish a new page and hope another editor links to it later.

Every SEO content brief should specify:

  • the canonical destination;

  • two or more candidate existing source pages when they genuinely exist;

  • required outbound links and why they help;

  • preferred anchor ideas, not mandatory repeated phrases;

  • navigation or breadcrumb changes;

  • links to replace after a merge or redirect; and

  • the owner responsible for implementation.

At publication:

  1. Add contextual inbound links from approved live pages.

  2. Add outbound routes from the new page.

  3. Confirm every target is live and canonical.

  4. Test rendered links on desktop and mobile.

  5. Update the link map and change log.

  6. Recheck the page after deployment.

A page can appear in a sitemap and still remain difficult for users to find. Google states that every important page should have a link from at least one other page on the site. Treat that as a minimum discovery condition, not a complete strategy.

10) Audit orphaned and weakly connected pages

An orphan page has no discoverable internal route from the site's crawlable pages. A weakly connected page may receive only an irrelevant footer or archive link.

Compare your canonical inventory with a crawl of internal links. Investigate pages with:

  • no inbound internal link;

  • only template or pagination links;

  • inbound links from unrelated sources;

  • no route to the next reader task;

  • many links pointing to a duplicate URL;

  • links arriving through redirect chains; or

  • one anchor repeated site-wide without useful context.

Do not automatically add links to every orphan. First decide whether the page should remain live, merge with another owner, redirect, stay accessible but unindexed, or retire.

For a valid page, choose sources that establish a real relationship. If no relevant source exists, the problem may sit in the content plan or information architecture rather than the link count.

11) Repair broken links, redirects and conflicting targets

Internal-link maintenance should follow every migration, content merge and URL change.

Audit for:

  • 404 or 410 destinations;

  • temporary or permanent redirects;

  • redirect chains and loops;

  • HTTP links on an HTTPS site;

  • staging or preview hosts;

  • parameters and alternate URL forms;

  • fragment links to removed headings;

  • canonicalised duplicates; and

  • links to retired products, services or locations.

Update internal links to the final canonical destination rather than relying on redirects indefinitely. Keep a redirect for visitors and external links when appropriate, but remove avoidable hops from your own pages.

When two pages compete for the same task, do not “balance authority” by linking to both. Decide which page owns the task, consolidate useful material if needed, and make internal targets consistent.

12) Prioritise links by reader and business value

Not every missing link carries the same urgency.

Prioritise:

  1. pages that complete high-value customer tasks;

  2. valid pages with no inbound route;

  3. new or substantially updated canonical pages;

  4. broken paths that stop an enquiry, purchase or support task;

  5. links pointing to redirects or duplicate targets;

  6. cluster gaps that leave readers without a necessary explanation; and

  7. useful contextual refinements.

Do not judge importance only by traffic. A low-volume enterprise service page may matter more than a high-traffic general article. A legal or support page may need clear access even when it does not convert.

Record the reason, source, target, owner and due date. This turns a crawl finding into editorial work.

13) Measure whether the routes work

Internal-link measurement should test discovery, use and outcome—not promise rankings.

Track:

  • whether important pages receive at least one crawlable inbound route;

  • broken-link and redirect counts;

  • the share of internal links pointing directly to canonical URLs;

  • clicks on key contextual or action links where event tracking is appropriate;

  • movement from informational landing pages to relevant commercial pages;

  • whether overlapping URLs resolve after consolidation; and

  • qualified actions that follow the intended journey.

Use Search Console to inspect the target page's discovery and query pattern over time. Use analytics events sparingly for important routes. A click does not prove that the destination satisfied the reader, and a ranking change does not prove that one internal link caused it.

Annotate major architecture, navigation or consolidation changes. Compare appropriate periods and keep other site changes in view.

14) Work through a hypothetical Kenyan solar cluster

Consider a hypothetical Nairobi solar installer with five useful destinations:

  • a solar-installation service page;

  • a guide to sizing a solar system;

  • a guide to information required for an accurate quotation;

  • a solar maintenance page; and

  • a quotation route.

Assign the page jobs

The service page owns the offer, process, service area and proof. The sizing guide helps readers estimate requirements without pretending to produce a final technical design. The quotation guide helps them prepare site and usage information. The maintenance page supports existing and prospective system owners. The quotation route collects verified enquiry details.

Map the reader paths

The service page links to sizing and quotation-preparation guidance where those resources answer pre-enquiry questions. Each guide links back to the service page when a reader needs professional assessment. The sizing guide links to the quotation guide after explaining which usage inputs matter. The maintenance page links to the service page only where the installer genuinely provides that service.

The quotation route receives action links from the service page and from the point in each guide where a reader has the information needed to continue.

Choose anchors

Useful anchor ideas include:

  • “solar installation services in Nairobi”;

  • “information needed for a solar quotation”;

  • “how to estimate your solar-system requirements”; and

  • “request a site assessment.”

The team avoids unverified anchors such as “cheapest solar installer in Kenya.”

Publish and maintain

When the quotation guide goes live, the editor adds inbound links from the service and sizing pages, tests the route, and records the sources in the link map. If the quotation URL later changes, the team updates those sources directly and keeps an appropriate permanent redirect from the old URL.

The example creates a useful journey without inventing prices, traffic, rankings, leads or an ideal number of links.

Use a final internal-link QA

Before approving a page or cluster, ask:

  • Does every important page have a clear canonical owner?

  • Does every important page receive at least one crawlable internal link?

  • Does each link help the source reader continue a real task?

  • Does the anchor describe the destination naturally and accurately?

  • Does the surrounding sentence explain why the route helps?

  • Do internal links point directly to live canonical URLs?

  • Are script-driven buttons also implemented as proper anchors where navigation occurs?

  • Have we removed broken links, unnecessary redirects and staging hosts?

  • Do supporting pages, commercial owners and action routes connect in both useful directions?

  • Did we update inbound and outbound links as part of publication?

  • Can an owner explain how the team will maintain the route?

If a link exists only because a keyword appeared, remove or rethink it.

A strong internal linking strategy makes the site easier to explore, clarifies which page owns each task and moves readers toward the right detail or action. Build those routes deliberately, then maintain them whenever content or URLs change.
